Youth Organizing Diversity for All (YODA)
YODA is a prejudice reduction program of the Santa Fe Rape Crisis & Trauma Treatment Center. The program helps facilitate a world where every person is valued and protected.
YODA's mission is to organize to end violence and harassment motivated by hate and ignorance against young people. We work to promote equity by actively teaching acceptance and prejudice reduction.
What YODA does
The YODA program:
- Offers experiential workshops and presentations for students on anti-homophobia, prejudice-reduction and honoring diversity.
- Offers workshops on human rights and anti-oppression (the "isms":
racism, sexism, ageism, etc.).
- Offers training workshops for teachers, administrators and counselors about stopping prejudicial harassment in schools and creating
safe and inclusive environments.
- Offers support and advocacy for Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Questioning (LGBTQ) youth.
- Encourages reporting of hate-motivated harassment and violence.
- Encourages breaking the silence and the cycle of oppression.
What students are saying about YODA
I learned from YODA that:
Prejudice is hurtful...It's in the words we use and things we say, and I can commit to work on myself and try to "plant the seed of thought" in others!
I learned about being an ally and what I can do to stop prejudice.
I really enjoyed this whole activity and I can honestly say that it's changed my life. So I hope that I can pass this info on to others...
I learned to celebrate diversity, to think before I act and to be aware of what I'm saying.
I can commit to stand up when people are being prejudiced and or respect differences in people.
Why YODA matters
By actively educating, we can break the cycle of prejudice, intolerance and hate.
The SFRC & TTC has taken an important step towards safety, equity and inclusion by recognizing homophobia as a form of sexual violence/harassment. Abuse, harassment, or exclusion from educational activities based
on a student's actual or perceived sexual orientation has been prohibited
by Title IX. Harassment of a sexual nature creates a hostile environment
for ALL students.
Violence and oppression feed on our silence. By talking about all
forms of prejudice and oppression, including homophobia, we create
spaces where every aspect of students' diversity is honored and
valued.
Every time we pretend that prejudice and hate harassment are not
problems or not our problems, we support the continuation of violence. We must educate and name the problems in order to stop them.
Without community there is no liberation.
